For shipping weight is important.
Dimensions are also important but not used for products.
I would like to see width, length and depth added to products.

yes, yes, yes, my shipping account goes on total cubic weight.... but then, this is the features requests section where nothing really matters what is asked for.

Well, you never know, on2dvd . . . this really is a very basic need and I would hope Viart would include in their normal plans
 
In the UK the Royal Mail now has rates based both on weight and packet dimensions. So we could not use Viart (only weight) to calculate the shipping cost.

I agree. This is very important.

The weight field is used for shipping calculations, it shouldn't make a difference whether you enter mass or cubic weight.
 
Most carriers are standardized at L x W x H / 6000 = weigh/KG.

You don't use Royal Mail?

Our courier charges us for the weight which shows the highest amount, either it be Weight or Volumectric weight.
 
Volumetric wieght is calculated as follows:
 
Volumetric Weight = ( Height X Width X Length ) / 6000

How does it work
 
DHL charges as follows:
 
Volumetric Weight = ( Height X Width X Length ) / 5000
 
How does viart handle the 3 dimensions ? Does it actually try and calculate the vol. weight ?

It allows you to pass these on to the customer using the shipping modules.

I have been harping about this shipping issue for a year now.
 
Here I go again; this is such an integral part of an ecommerce shop, especially when you are selling items that have qty increments that require diffferent boxes sizes and weights.
 
For instance my manufactured products start at say; 100pcs - 1 box - 9x12x12 size\
500pcs - 2 boxes - 9x12x18 (each box)
1000pcs - 4 boxes - 9x12x18 (each box)
 
So how do I incorporate that into each product?

My proposal:
 
What we need is a field for 'shipping units'.
A shipping unit (SU) is, in this example, $5
SU always round up
 
Product A costs $10 to ship )flat rate Priority Mail box)
One Product B will fit in the same box for no additional charge
 
A second Product B bumps the shipping up to $15 (larger flat rate Priority Mail box)
 
So:
Product A takes 1.5 SU
Product B takes .5 SU
 
Shipping module adds up SUs, rounds up to the next whole unit, multiplys by the SUs cost, adds a handling fee and Bob's Your Uncle.
