Hi all

I'm in the middle of developing a full ajax product lister to replace the default product list / search results page used in Viart.

I just wondered if anyone else has undertaken this task as well and if so how their results were?

I'm basing mine on something like the system used on a site such as: topshop.com or asos.com, where you can change product properties (in these cases clothing size, clothing item categories etc) and results are updated on the fly, with all the product thumbnails refreshing via ajax calls.

Any experiences shared would be greatly appreciated!

Hello arkid

I am not so fond of the Ajax product lister. I have seen a lot of times, on some sites, that when you click on ajax listings, when the loading icons comes up, it stays there. I have seen a lot of times that this function does not work flawlessly.

No experience, but I am keen to see what you come up with, looks cool.

Ibn Saeed; I too have sometimes seem it working badly but theres no technical reason why it cant be made to work 100%, even with 100% failsafe fall back for compatibility with older browsers.

asos.com, topshop.com, hostelworld.com are all examples Ive used I find quite nice and working without issues (they pretty much have to as they are huge professional ecommerce sites).

Im developing this myself from the ground up to replace the products listing page in viart and will add a link here when its done and up and running for my new client..

But are the majority of the visitors familiar with such browsing ?

Would you release the code ?

Ibn Saeed; yes I think so. Its intuitive and very visible in the designs of the sites I just mentioned as examples. Also if such a feature is complimented by a drop down menu system then in effect there are 2 totally different ways to browse.

Im also going to make my custom listing page work with the viart category friendly url values, so just as with the current system, if you navigate by normal with categories then this would still work, and on the initial page load a JS request will request the categories matching products and these would be fed in as standard.

About code; i think unfortunately im not going to be able to in its entirety due to contractual reasons. I may be able to give parts of the generic libraries im developing, I will let you know.

How much would it cost for you to code for me ?

Hmm well its not finished yet so very hard to say, but starting somewhere around £500 and up depending on complexity.

Give me a few weeks... hopefully then the shop with this will be live and I will publish the url here and you can have a look.

alright, though 500 pounds is a lot for me

Ibn Saeed; sorry about this I understand; London based development work doesnt come as cheap as work from the Ukraine thats for sure.

Did this ever get implemented by anyone?

Hi all

Now this site isnt live yet but it is almost finished. The implementation im using is visible on all product listing pages as the product list block is specified to use a custom php file for its content.

I checked it out, it works fine.

But when i loaded the products listing page, the ajax category menu on the left, showed overlapping text.

what browser and version are you using?

I used Firefox 3.6.13

it did not happen again in the refresh. I think it took the page from the cache.

I am trying to recreate the issue....

Hi.
That was most odd. Firefox is one of my primary test and work browsers and I've never seen it do that.

I have now turned off GZIP compression on the server as it seems to have caused something similar in IE6 testing.

Can you try again?

Ibn Saeed
Ibn Saeed
I tried again, but this time i refresh by pressing "SHIFT + CTRL + R" so that firefox reloads the page again.

here is the result.

It only seems to happen when the site's content (images) are loading for the first time in the visitors browser.

Chrome and IE shows the filter just fine

When i first loaded the stiein Opera 11, the same issue appeared

So far, the issue is showing up in Opera and Firefox, can it be the browser's javascript engine ?

But i am not able to recreate the issue in Opera, but in firefox, when ever i do a hard refresh, the issue appears.

ibn saeed... ive never seen an issue like this in my 10 years of web development. how bizzare.

it seems all images in that shot except the logo top left are failing to load. are you sure you havent got some addblock or some other extension installed in firefox that is causing this?

ive had nobody report this to me in testing either. most most odd... im really not sure what it can be.

and there are lots of images in that shot that have nothing to do with the ajax content. all the check boxes in the left nav are not served by ajax, as isnt the footer etc etc. So why these failed to load i really dont know.

I would put it down to either some odd software filtering (in browser or via a proxy somewhere) or a very intermittent internet connection.

I would like to tell you that when the pages load completely, it goes back to normal

The overlapping text issue only appears when the page is first served fresh. The overlapping does not stay for long

I do have Adblock, but its not blocking any of your images.

ohhh ok.. it wasnt clear that this was a screenshot from a still loading page. I thought that was a fully loaded page showing that.

Ok thats easy. Its fixed. I wasnt specifying height/width dimensions for static graphics in the nav, so its now resolved.

Thanks for mentioning.

Ibn Saeed
Ibn Saeed
Excellent, you have solved it

Now the site is loading fine.
