Can someone give me an idea of hosting space/bandwidth needed to start up 5 multis?

It depends on the amount of products, visitors, web content, etc.

You can restrict the images to just one site, so files are just the duplication of basic Viart files on each site.
There is only one database so I guess it is not a lot more.
