It would be fabulous if an option was available to have the Category image randomly selected from all active products in that category. This way the page would always look fresh and you wouldn't have to worry that the image used for the category is from a product that has been discontinued.

As a stopgap how about a swf or animated gif?

Was there ever any further progress on this? Sounds like a fantastic idea!
