HI! We sale software. And this feature will be good for all software vendors.
 
 
It will be good to be able to manage upgrades.
 
A customer should be able to buy a product only if he already bought (own) another product.
 
So if a customer bought the software v1.x and now he wants to buy the v2.x with that features it will be possible.
 
Please think about it, and I think that feature will not take that much time to implement.

HI Five5! This how we manage the upgrade now. We send a coupon code to each customer who wants to upgrade. But the process is 100% manual.
 
With that feature all the process will be automate.
Also, for now we are small company. But the day we'll get, let say 10 000 customers who want to upgrade after a new release, it will not be an easy task to manage.

Going a step further in the serial number portion, you need to verify that the serial number is valid and actually belongs to the person ordering it.
 
This prevents software from being upgraded, that has been acquired in less than proper methods.
 
So you would need to be able to connect the serial number to the registered user and verify against this information BEFORE allowing a downloaded copy to be obtained.
 
This is why we don't provide for a download-able upgrade currently. There is no automated way to verify the serial numbers entered by the person ordering belong to the person ordering.
 
This gets even more complicated when you also offer third party "add-on" products and can not send an e-mail, with serial number verify, to the manufacturer for a "drop ship" or download that is tried to the serial number of your product.
 
I would fully support this addition and, because I know it is not going to be free, willing to contribute to the funding of the same.

HI! The way I see that feature is simple.
 
1) Only registered user will be able to see that upgrade product (Already implemented) or the product may be visible, but the customer will have to enter his serial number. (Serial number needs to be unique)
 
2) Check in the database if the logged user already bought a giving product.
 
3) If the customer owns the software v1.x then he can add to the cart the product v2.x (Upgrade)
 
4) The rest of the shopping process remains the same.

Add a new tab for Upgradable product where the administrator can select the prerequisites products. The same way we can select user types that can buy a product.
 
To be able to manage customer who did not register we can ask them for their serial number. In that case the serial number needs to be unique.
 
This feature will not work perfectly for people who are soling other companies’ software. But will be 110% effective for people who are soling their own products or services.
