I used the paid version of Viart before, but am currently setting up a free version for cheapskate clients .
 
The default language during installation was english.
 
Afterwards, I removed several languages (NOT english), and installed chinese & japanese languages by copying & renaming en folder (just needed to change charset for product descriptions).
 
Full list of languages used is now: english, spanish, japanese & chinese.
 
Everything worked fine, but suddenly the admin interface switched to spanish. Huh?
 
I checked the config file var_definition.php, and the default language is still "en" for english. I can get the admin area back into english only by renaming the "es" spanish folder to something else - but I need it for the site itself.
 
Wasn't able to find any info on admin language setting anywhere...
 
Any advice would be appreciated.

Actually, the last language that you use on the site is saved in the cookies. The next time you visit the site, this language is retrieved from the cookies. You can change a language on the site to English and then visit the admin section. The language will be changed to English too. Alternatively, you can change an active language anywhere on the site by adding an appropriate paramater to a browser's url, for example: http://www.yoursite.com/admin/admin.php?language_code=en

Actually, there's no language pack. I just copied english versions and changed header code so chinese can be entered in the product descriptions. I'm trying to get my web design customers to translate the navigation and other messages, at least into Chinese.
 
I'll definitely let you know should I receive these translations.
