Just a small question - since I don't see the upgrade option in the admin section... if I update now manually, will my older db work?

Kami Upgrade is in system-->system upgrade, I don't think it has been released for that yet. Anyway, for the database, have you tried saving the data as a sql in your existing database (not the structure). Insert the sql for the new database without inserting the test data, then execute the sql data from your old database.
 
This should populate the new database structure with your existing data. Before you do all this, don't forget to back up your old database fully.
