This would be nice, but I also need to be able to use CMS to put a custom block there, or even banner ads.

I' also working on this.
 
For the moment what i did is t go into the folder templates > users and change the file header.html
I've added a div (a table is also ok even if not hype at all for the moment) above all pher content and to add the image in the div. After tht you have to find in the first lines of code the code for the actual logo and comment i. That should do the trick.
