I'm a newbie.
I deleted the product from "Special offer" on the home page. That worked! But the whole middle block has disappeared. Also..Anything I transfer from "Available Blocks" is not visible on my site. Can anyone help?
What is clearing the cache?

ok this is a dumb question, but when you move the available blocks are you definitely pressing save or update ?
 
and as for the middle block disappearing, its probably something to do with the middle blocks not being displayed at all when there is no content inside and the relevant CSS does not hold the column "open" as such. You could probably tweak the CSS if you needed the space held open, put a spacer gif in there or something.

You didn't check "Hide Middle Column" - just above the Update button?

I'm definitely updating (no question is too dumb if its directed at me and it relates to subjects of this nature). The "Hide Middle Column' facility is definitely unchecked...so that's OK. I'll check out the CSS option (?). I won't ask you what the CSS is until I investigate it fully.

No content was the problem, I listed a product and the block miraculously reappeared...now I can't make the image appear..there you go!
