I am experiencing a problem with the first product page. When I can´t put any products in the top category, then the first products page, like www.mydomain.com/products.php, is empty. How can I add a message or an image or something on this page, without having to show the same on every category page?
Isn´t there a way of adding a category description to the top category as well?

Well, I find it peculiar that it is not possible to put some introduction text or an image on the first product page, but I solved it in another way:
 
I created a new custom page and made it look like the products-page and in the page-body I could write an introduction. Then I changed the menu link to this new page.
 
It is not a perfect solution and when the visitors for example click the top category in the breadcrumbs they will end up on the real products page.. But I guess a just have to remove all the breadcrumbs and so on.. :-/

You could have added a custom block on the first products page. And specify that it only show up for that certain category. When you add the custom block put this in the parameters field "category=##"

To have products in the 'Top' just go to the 'Top' category and allow to show sub-category products.

Can you explain how we can reach to "Top" category's settings so we can set it to show sub-category products?
 
I even entered into database and there is no category called "Top" there.

If you add Products (Subcategories List) to the top row of the centre block of Products Listing Page (in CMS) it lists Categories - which is better than an empty page.

Just checking are you aware that you CAN add products to this "Top" category.
 
You simply go to any product and click the link "category" and then choose "Products [Top]"
