I don't have a local server - is it possible to install on a public server (I can seta side a spare domain) to test - would I need a licence to do this?

In your case the license wouldn't work because you have expired Updates Extension. You may purchase the Updates Extension for your license here: http://www.viart.com/updates_extension.html
And then go to http://www.viart.com/activation and regenerate the license file (selecting "4.0 and later") which you may upload to your current domain subfolder with ViArt's latest version e.g. www.yoursite.com/viart4.0.1

I'm not seeing the image zoom, although I've made the changes to the product block as described in the page http://www.viart.com/viart_4_0_1_beta_is_available_for_download.html
 
I am running this on a local server, is it possible that I'm lacking something in my installation?
 
The Ajax cart add option works fine, though.

if you haven't already done so try :
Settings> Product Settings> Images> and for 'Open Large Image' select 'in the active window' (and update obviously)...
 

Thanks for the tip, did check that and it's set to 'in the active window'. Not sure what else to check.

It doesn't matter what option you select in "Open Large Image" setting, Zoom feature works both for active and pop-up window.

Make sure to download the latest files from this link: http://www.viart.com/downloads/viart_shop-4.0.1.zip. It is possible you have some outdated files or maybe you have some customization that prevails the feature to work or there is some unusual settings environment. If you could recreate this problem on the live server we would appreciate if you contact us so we could help you to investigate.
