I was wondering if Zend is a required install for the non-free versions of ViArt. I'm looking to purchase Enterprise, but wanted to be sure that I have the correct information. Some companies use Zend to encrypt the files of free or trial versions of their software, but don't require it for the payed-for versions.

Zend Optimizer is one of prerequisites for ViArt Shop.
Zend Optimizer is a free application that can be downloaded from
http://www.zend.com/store/products/zend-optimizer.php
 
ViArt Shop contains 97% of open source code; the remaining 3% of the code is encoded within the library ./includes folder.
Within the 97% of open code it is possible to fully customize ViArt to your individual needs.

By charging a fee for our work and protecting our intelectual property we are able to reinvest in the product to the advantage of all our users.
 
If open source is critical to you then there are several commendable systems available that you could use. If you wish to make use of the high level features available in Viart then you must take the risks associated with using encoded software.
