I have changed layout [/admin_layout_page.php?page_name=basket] for the Basket Page Layout to create a left column to take my js menu.
However, if a customer wants to 'save basket' there is no left column and much of the text disappears behind the menu. There appears to be no facility in CMS 'retrieve my basket'.
