I am trying to get a site search in the header right next to the login and can not get it to work. any suggestions?

Tried adding a "float:left;" to the login block?

It is so difficult to customize header. Could anyone tell me whats the easiest way to add user login, # of cart items, search box, etc. in the header. Only the logo exists in all templates which makes it even more difficult to find an alternative solution as a non css professional.
