I have to ask, where any changes made to the templates on this new version?

From newest 2.6 version we will use only one set of templates so there were many changes in CSS styles for all pages but you still can use your old templates.
 
Also there are were small changes in templates for following changes: 'Editable product prices' 'Processing Fee', 'Order Tracking Links', 'Product Preview Window', 'Currency block on checkout page'. If you don't need any of those functionality you can leave your old templates as they are.
