5.11. 'Tell a friend' option
Prev Index Next

Sometimes it might be very handy to have a possibility to inform a friend of yours about what you've found. With ViArt Shop your customers will have it. This can also be a good and free promotion of your site.

There is an icon of an envelope with an arrow in the upper right corner of every product detail page. This is the so called 'Tell a Friend' option. If a customer has found a product that his/her friend might be interested in, he or she can inform him/her about it by clicking that icon. A new popup window will open where the customer will be prompted to provide his/her name and e-mail address as well the ones of the friend. After clicking the 'Send' button an e-mail will be send.

This is how it works from the storefront side. But in order to make it work properly, you have to set it up from the administration section of your online store. Please go to Administration > Shopping Cart > Tell A Friend.

The page you see consists of two parts: Default Settings and User Email Notification Settings.

Default Settings

The first part of the settings contains a default comment that will be sent with all messages. Note that customers won't see it and thus won't be able to edit. As with other e-mail settings in ViArt Shop you can use special tags. These tags are placed in braces and when an e-mail message is sent are replaced by tags values. For example, the {item_name} tag will be replaced by the title of the product a customer wants to inform his/her friend about. You can look through the full list of such tags by clicking the 'click here to see all available message tags' link.

User Email Notification Settings

The second part of the page specifies the settings of the e-mail message itself. Here, the main fields are From and Message.

Note: you can get a detailed description of all e-mail fields if you click the 'click here to learn more about all email fields' link.

If the 'From' field is left blank, a customer will have to provide his/her own e-mail address and it will be displayed in the 'From' field when the message will be sent. However, if you enter an e-mail (e.g. info@yoursite.com), a customer will have to provide his/her own e-mail address anyway, but it will be replaced by the one entered by you. In such a case the customer e-mail will be displayed in the 'Reply to' field provided the same field in the administration part is empty.

To make it more clear: the system gives preferences to the e-mails provided by an administrator rather than a customer.

The contents of the 'Message' field will be displayed as the e-mail body and may be edited by a customer. You can customize its feel and look by specifying whether you want to use HTML or Plain text format and using some tags. (You can look through the full list of them by clicking the 'click here to learn more about email settings and see all available message tags' link. Note that you can add these tags into your email body and email subject.)

In order to save the changes you made click the 'Update' button. If you want to leave without saving click 'Cancel'.
