5.10. Advanced search settings
Prev Index Next

If you want to make your online store more user-friendly, you should equip it with a good product search. A simple one can be provided by adding the 'Products (Search Form)' block to the main page (see section 3.4.4), the product list page (see section 5.1.1) and the product detail page (see section 5.1.2).

The block allows searching through the product titles as well as gives access to the advanced search page. In order to set it up please go to Administration > Shopping Cart > Advanced Search.

You can start with entering some sort of introduction or explanation notes and proceed to the search fields.

Actually, the process of setting up the advanced search page is just indicating the fields your customers will be able to search through. By default there are six of them:

Note: You can add/remove any of the fields by ticking off / clearing the corresponding check boxes.

  • Search for
  • Search in
  • Search in category
  • Manufacturer
  • Price
  • Weight

The first two (Search for and Search in) specify the main search criteria, namely what a customer is looking for and where. Three locations can be selected: product titles, short and detailed descriptions.

The next two fields (Search in category and Manufacturer) allow making the criteria more concrete. Note that the fields will be displayed in the form of a list box with the values taken from the category tree existing in the system (for the former) and from the 'Static tables' section (for the latter). (For more information see section 12.3.)

And the last two (Price and Weight) allow specifying the range of values the product searched should match.

The next series of search fields includes 'Search in the products options' and 'Search in the products specifications'. Note that the system will display only those options and specifications that are assigned to at least one product. You can also specify some default values, in such a case the fields will be presented in the form of a list box. If left blank, a text box will be used.

Click the 'Update' button to save the changes you made or 'Cancel' to leave without saving.
